Modern Arnis Chicago teaches the Filipino Martial Art of Modern Arnis as developed by its founder, the late “Professor” Remy A. Presas (1936 – 2001). Our objectives are to: 1. Preserve and share the art created by Professor Remy Presas 2. Continue to develop the art and 3. Improve ourselves and our training partners Modern Arnis instructors teach in a friendly and cooperative environment without rigid formalities. All skill levels are welcome. Regardless of previous experience or background, Modern Arnis has something to offer everyone. Your hard work and effort will be paid off by the confidence of knowing that if the need arises, you will be able to protect yourself and your loved ones. Modern Arnis a complete self-defense system that trains the practitioner to be proficient in both weapons based and empty hand combat. Students start with single and double stick drills and techniques. Training with sticks significantly improves a student’s reflexes and agility before progressing to empty hand and ground training. Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) have gained popularity in both MMA and Hollywood due to their speed and effectiveness. Master James Ladis
Modern Arnis Chicago operates under the guidance of Master Ladis, one of only seven people in the world awarded the title of Master of Tapi Tapi by Professor Presas which was considered by him to be the highest level of achievement in the art. While Master Ladis no longer teaches regularly, he continues to improve the skills of his senior students and shares his knowledge through seminars.
Mukesh Pitroda has been studying under
Master Ladis in Modern Arnis since 1996. He
currently holds the rank of third degree black
belt. Mukesh has conducted several
seminars on personal self-defense and
continues to improve his skills and
knowledge through private lessons in several
different martial arts. Mukesh has been
teaching Modern Arnis in Oak Park, Illinois

Rob Boyle has been studying modern arnis
since 1998, when he started training with
Master Jim Ladis. He now holds a third
degree black belt. He has also studied Aikido
and Escrima, and has performed a martial
arts piece in a production for Breakbone
Dance Company. Rob was born and raised in
the Chicagoland area, and he works as a
freelance game designer and editor. He
doesn't have much spare time between his
son, DJing and dancing to industrial music,
reading science fiction, playing dodgeball,
and teaching modern arnis at Chang's Martial
Arts on Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, Illinois.
Chuck Westcott has been a martial artist
for nearly thirty years. He earned his first
black belt in Taekwondo in 1986 and now
holds a fourth dan. He has studied Modern
Arnis with Master Jim Ladis since 1998 and
currently holds a fourth degree black belt. He
also practices Tai Chi Chuan and has various
levels of experience with several other martial
arts.
A graduate of Northwestern University and
the DePaul University College of Law, he
originally intended to pursue a legal career.
However, he left the practice of law and in
2004, opened Chang’s Martial Arts Academy
in Lincolnwood, Illinois. In 2014, he moved
the school to Elmhurst, Illinois where he
teaches Taekwondo and Modern Arnis
